NOTD - Chanel Morning Rose

How long has it been since a NOTD? Too long I think.

It's not that I've not been wearing polish, but strangely, I've been reverting to ones I've worn (and photographed) before and so it's not very interesting to re-post the same shades is it?

I bought Morning Rose last year along with the much coveted Mimosa, but strangely enough, I never photographed her. So here she is.

A strange one, this. In the bottle she screams to be loved, worshipped and never forgotten. In a way she captured my heart more than Mimosa in the bottle.

Chanel Morning Rose

But her salmon-pink loveliness seems to fade into 'just pretty' on the fingers. The formula doesn't help. It goes on a bit unevenly and even with two coats it seems patchy. The golden micro glitter doesn't come through as strongly most of the time, only in sunlight. In fact, Morning Rose was born to be in the sun. Normal daylight just doesn't do her any justice, in fact, she's could be considered a little boring. But let her shimmer in the sun and you realise why she was created, to evoke the dew glistening on a perfect rose first thing in the morning light. Poetic, huh?

Chanel Morning Rose, glistening gold flecks in the bottle

Also, I think that one carefully applied coat looks more refined than two. And it's very rare that that happens. Ms R was the first to point it out to me, being unashamedly a one-coat girl anyway. But she's right in this case. I wish I'd stopped, and photographed, one coat. It's an almost nude look with a salmon pink blush. Very, very elegant.

All the photos show two coats with Essie Good to Go topcoat. And they were taken on my iPod, which oddly enough picks up the colour a bit more accurately than my Fujicam.

Does Morning Rose charm you or bore you?

Summer favourites after I've been MIA

MIA.... Missing In Action. And there's been a lot of action to be missing in recently.

I don't know how to feel coming back to my blog after such a long absence, but I was suddenly hit with the urge to write again. Actually in truth, it wasn't as if I ever actually lost the writing bug, but the photography bug had definitely vacated my system and the sheer thought of photographing and uploading anything at all just filled me with ... bleurgh....

But I feel I owe it to myself and my small but steady band of readers to kick my brain into gear and start blogging again.

So I'll ease myself back in gently.... and we'll talk about summer favourites shall we? What are we all loving using this summer? Please share, and in return, I'll share mine.

Erborian BB Creme

  • Erborian BB cream. I've banged on about it so much you'll probably want to block this site if I mention it one more time, but it floors me every time I put this on and gaze at my pseudo-perfect skin. Doubles up as my sunscreen too.
L'Occitane Verbena Sorbet Body Ice Gel

  • L'Occitane Verbena Sorbet Body Ice Gel. Like glazing your poor over-heated corpus in a cryogenic mojito..... not so much moisturising as enlivening. Actually the cryogenic reference was quite creepy, sorry. But you get the picture... it's cold. And minty citrus.
Rituals Wai Wang Body Scrub
  • Rituals Wai Wang body scrub. Love at first freebie. Came as a mini with a magazine back in May and I fell for it hook line and sinker on holiday in Crete. Not the scrubbiest of scrubs, but somehow the fine grains embedded in the most luxurious of cremes seem to buff skin to smoothness hitherto unknown. This now ranks jointly as my number one body exfoliator, along with the L'Occitane Almond one I've loved for years. Only this is less than half the price at around the £14 mark. Smells like a balmy summer's evening in the arms of your loved one....
Origins Mega Bright

  • Origins Mega Bright Serum. Not just for summer obviously, but I love how this just makes me look better. I've been using it for almost a month and I can say that it does seem to fade spot scars and unevenness quite effectively, without being creepy, if you know what I mean. The results are not shockingly evident, but as time goes by I realise that this is a little bottle of magic that my skin seems to like and respond to. I can almost go concealer-less this summer. Almost.
Bourjois Magic Nail Polish Remover

You can just about make out the hole in the centre where you dip your finger an twist... go on, I dare you.

  • Bourjois Magic Nail Polish Remover. An example of how a boring everyday product can evolve into an invention that can change your life. Or at least your nail colour. Seriously, it's a little pot of wonder, worthy of a fairy-tale. The one about the princess who wanted to change her manicure in a flash and simply popped each finger into a pot of black sponge, only for it to emerge completely free of colour, ready for the next swipe of Chanel. I need back-ups of this because if I run out I'll cry.
My much-used Dior Summer Powder (Aurora) from Summer 2011

  • Dior Healthy Glow Summer Powder (from last year).  Look people, I hit the pan! And there was a lot of this to begin with. Let's remind ourselves what it once looked like:

I'm ashamed at how manky it now looks in comparison to it's radiant beauty in this photo. It means it's been well-loved though, imparting my visage with a veil of warmth which is flattering without being bronzer-like. I'm not a huge fan of orange-y bronzers, it's so easy to over-do it. But with this beautiful powder it's almost impossible. This year's incarnation is perhaps even more stunning, housed in a round compact with DIOR spelt out in the various shades. I'm holding out for next year's now.

Real Techniques Blush Brush

  •  Real Techniques Blush Brush. And this is what I've using with the Dior. Bought months ago and then neglected. Lovely, big and fluffy, it actually wasn't firm enough for me at the start and didn't seem to pick up enough colour. But now I see it's magic. It picks up the colour and practically airbrushes it onto the skin. I use this for blush too, just the tip, and then gently swirl it into my cheekbones. Gives a perfect finish, and now one of my staples. The entire Real Techniques brush line is a winner. I bow down to their greatness.
Please tell me what you've been loving this summer. If you've forgiven me, that is....

Smooth legs for longer.... my way!

(A long post, but hopefully a useful one. If you're still there at the end, I salute you.)

For as long as I've had a body I've had hair, like, everywhere. In fact I'm sure that the only reason I have a body is so that the hair can have something to attach itself to.
I tend to think that I was born into puberty and somehow skipped that happy decade or so when children run freely about the beach/playground/park, all carefree and blissfully unaware of hormonal brutality biding it's time before mercilessly striking those poor innocent kids with blows of puppy fat, acne, and shrubs.

So, having had my childhood cruelly wrenched from me at birth I've had a lifetime of trying to pretend to be hair-free and carefree. When laser hair removal first hit the market over a decade ago I frequently imagined myself standing in a booth while NASA laser beams zapped me from the shoulders downwards, blitzing every last blasted follicle, giving me eternal smoothness and freedom from endless hours in the bathroom ripping, scraping, bleaching, dissolving and contorting myself into positions which would certainly have given me a provisional audition with Cirque du Soleil.

Alas, lasers are both painful (even more than waxing I dare say) and painfully expensive. They work, but require commitment and a hefty bank balance, neither of which I possess. In the brief period of my life when I could benefit from laser hair removal I saw results but without that commitment it all came growing back.

Why am I telling you this? Because you have to understand where I'm coming from to understand the solution to the problem. If you've never had problems with dark, stubborn body hair that tends to in-grow, then you probably won't need to read this. If you can wax your legs and it lasts 4-6 weeks before you need to wax again, then lucky you. If you can shave and not still see the hair under the skin, be cursed with razor bumps and ingrown hairs, then great. But not me.

A leg wax usually leaves me with smooth legs for about 7 days, 10 days max. Shaving lasts me 12 hours, and I can't shave two days in a row as it causes me terrible razor bumps. A whole summer in dresses was something I could never contemplate... until this summer.

Here is the crucial bit of info that has changed the way I depilate:

HAIR GROWTH HAS 3 PHASES: ANAGEN, CATOGEN, TELOGEN.

The one that concerns us here is the ANAGEN, or GROWTH, phase. In order to maximise the effects of your chosen hair removal method you need to ensure that most of the hair is in the anagen phase, that's when the hair starts to grow, hair that just appears on the surface of the skin, not hair that's been there for a while.

My mistake all these years was to get my legs waxed, and then epilate inbetween with an electric epilator which uses the rotating discs to pluck out the hairs. The problem with this was that I was never smooth. Ok, I didn't look like George of the Jungle, but my legs were never in a good enough state to be exposed, always covered in swollen follicles, hairs about to burst through but not quite, and worst of all, patches of hair that had surfaced but were still under the skin. I'm not painting a pretty picture here, huh?

Salons always tell you never to shave your legs, right? But about 6 months ago, when I was still in Brussels, I got my legs waxed and the therapist was despairing that all her hard work was going to waste. She had waxed off all she could, but you could clearly see a whole new 'generation' of hair about to sprout. This leg wax would last me about 3 days before I would have to cover up again. She told me not to use the epilator, but to start shaving and to keep shaving until all the hair had caught up, and only then should I wax again.

Well, what can I say? It seems so simple, and yet, it works.

Like I said previously, shaving alone is not enough for me, my skin is too pale and my hair too dark, meaning that you can still see the cut-off hair under the skin, even if my legs feel as smooth as silk. So, after two months of shaving, I booked my appointment for a wax here in London just before my holiday in May. I told the therapist that I had been shaving to get the hairs to the same stage and she was horrified saying that she had never heard that before and that shaving was 'the worst thing'.

But what do you know? My leg wax lasted me two weeks. Ok, some hair came through but it was so fine I didn't even have to shave it off. After about three weeks I started to shave again, and I could still wear skirts. In fact, that was back in May and now it's the end of June and I'm still shaving and wearing skirts. Because I had waxed previously, there aren't so many black 'spots' left when I shave meaning that I retain that smooth look for longer. Now it's getting to that stage where more follicles are reaching the anagen phase, meaning that there is more hair and that soon I'll have to wait a week of two without shaving and then wax again. But what this means to me is that out of three months I'll only have two weeks in which I'll be George of the Jungle and 2 1/2 months of California beach babe.....

And another EXTREMELY IMPORTANT piece of advice:

EXFOLIATE LIKE MAD. I started from about the 3rd day after my wax and scrubbed myself every other day. I used the free Rituals body scrub that came with Easy Living two months ago (a-ma-zing), and then St Ives Apricot scrub after that, but use anything that you like. Just do it, and moisturise generously afterwards. My holiday tan stayed smooth and even and didn't flake at all, which was a big bonus. But more importantly, the amount of ingrowns had reduced considerably.

So let me put it in a nutshell for simplicity:

 1) Shave legs until most of the hair is growing at the same time

2) Let hair grow for roughly 1-2 weeks, or until long enough to be waxed

3) Get a professional leg wax

4) Start exfoliating every other day from the 3rd day after your wax. Make sure you moisturise after.

5) When the hair starts to grow and become noticeable begin to shave again, DO NOT EPILATE.

6) Continue to shave until legs no longer look smooth. This means most of the hair has started to catch up and you can start think about letting it grow in preparation for your next wax.

There you have it. My little discovery. It may not be that thrilling, or that new even, but for me it's a bit of a revelation, and maybe for someone else it will be too.

PS: I'm sorry the only pictures in this long post are of a gorilla and a nutshell, but this particular subject matter does not lend itself well to pretty pictures.....

I'm on Pinterest!

It's a wretched, miserable day here in London and the weather is giving no signs of mercy. So what better tonic than a cup of tea and time spent indoors in front of a few pretty pictures....

This is why I love Pinterest, the online clipboard where you can post anything that takes your fancy. I joined over a month ago to create a gallery of my manicures and stuff that I like to bake, but then it gets a bit addictive and you start pinning photos of anything that makes you go 'oooooooohh'. You can re-pin any images you like and it's a lovely record of everything that's sugar to your eyes.

All my NOTDs on one Pinterest board
You can follow my pins (pandorapins) here .

Let me know if you're on Pinterest too!

LK Bennett Rose Gold Pumps!

I couldn't think of a more imaginative title, but they are what they are....

I'm not a fashion blogger, but I had to post these as they have brought sunshine into my life and I'm prancing about amongst all the removal boxes feeling that much prettier and lighter on my feet.

LK Bennett rose-gold Suki pumps

I was once described by a teacher as being 'visually inhibited', which basically means that I'm easily distracted from what I'm doing because something has caught my eye and I'm away with the fairies... the result of which means that I went out with mother P and grandma P to buy a dustbinn and came back with rose-gold ballerina shoes instead.

I still have no dustbin, much to my mother's horror. To be fair, she did insist that I go and buy new shoes too, sensible ones that would withstand the torrential rain that thundered down all of yesterday. At least I fulfilled 50% of the brief. I mean, they are shoes after all. My very indulgent gran gifted them to me when she saw how besotted I was. But then she too insisted that we go find more 'practical' shoes and, finally, the dustbin.

But in the end no practical shoes, no dustbin, just a smile and a skip and two despairing glances my way.

Bye Bye Brussels Beauty

Can you tell I have a thing for alliteration?

So, a long time coming, here's a little tribute to all the little beauty bits that I will miss about Brussels:

(for those of you new to this blog, I have just moved back to London after a four year stint in Belgium and the blog and I are trying to adjust to the new state of affairs.... )

1) The pharmacies for all the lovely and very cult French brands they stock, like Nuxe, Caudalie, La Roche-Posay, Lierac etc etc.... yes you can get them all here, but it's the convenience I'll miss, they are literally everywhere in Belgium, whereas you have to hunt them down a bit here. I'm particularly hankering after the Effaclar creams (click here for review) again as the stress has made my skin flare up again *sad face*.

2) Ici Paris XL, but ONLY because they stock Erborian BB cream which is completely amazing and generally completely ignored in the beauty blogging world. What can I say? People just won't listen up.

I can heartily add that I do NOT miss the Ici Paris shopping 'experience' however.

3)Natural cosmetics seem more readily available in Brussels, especially those uber-hippy all organic, all fair-trade, no-nasties brands. I'm by no means a organic fanatic but sometimes you like to feel the inner peace which comes with showering with a vaguely rose-scented, non-lathering shower gel which is supporting a precious aloe harvest in a small Mexican village.... Look, sometimes it makes me feel better, ok?

4)MAC. It was literally a 20 minute walk from our flat in Brussels. Now I have to take the tube. *tuts*

5) Limited Editions. No one in Brussels gets that excited about limited edition Chanel polishes or the new Dior palette, or whatever, which means they are pretty much always around if you want them. They are still selling Chanel Mimosa for the record. I could always be guaranteed of getting any limited edition product I was after without the mad rush we have here in London. We are just too informed now.

HOT TIP: For those in Brussels the Planet Parfum branch in Midi Station stocks pretty much every Chanel polish that's been discontinued, so if you're still after Mimosa, Morning Rose, Peridot, Rouge Carat....go check if they have them there.

6) Salon Waxing. Soooo much cheaper there as it's considered essential maintenance and not a luxury. However I think that I have FINALLY just hit on the secret to longer-lasting leg smoothness.... it may be a bit contraversial but I will promise to post on this soon.  Remind me if I forget and you're dying to know ;)

7) Free samples: They are quite generous with samples in Brussels, they'll always chuck in a few perfume vials or some skin cream sachets. In London I always have to ask quite cheekily and I get all embarassed because I'm a bit English like that and don't like asking for things....

But for all that I'll miss in Brussels I'm so exstatic to be back near Boots, Superdrug and the entire realm of discount online beauty shopping.... I don't even know where to begin. If you're a UK lass, brought up and bred on one's proximity to Boots, try living without for 4 years and then tell me I'm a fruitloop.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.....

..... or maybe not. Anyhow, I just wanted to apologise to any expectant (as in waiting, not pregnant) readers for letting the blog slide off my radar in the last few weeks (dare I say months?)....

So here's the news: Mr P and I are moving into our new flat tomorrow and as you can imagine we have a load of stuff to deal with, albeit nice stuff as it involves shopping and me trying to fill the house with pink and Mr P fighting his corner with greys and browns. Who will win? Well, I saw a fuschia velvet boudoir chair the other day, it might magically appear in the living room one day courtesy of the sofa fairy....

Anyway, the last thing I've had on my mind recently is photographing my nails and shopping for treats (although Crete Duty Free has kindly provided me with my next post. Just so you know in advance, Korres products totally ROCK! )

In other news:

On my nails at the moment is Bluebell by Nails Inc (periwinkle blue) (free with Instyle this month, or was it last month?). See, I can't even remember, how terrible a blogger am I? On my toes is Beach by Nails Inc (orangey red), also an Instyle freebie from 2010. I like a freebie I do.

I've recently discovered the Macadamia Oil hair range and I'm quite liking it. If you want to try it out head to Cheapsmells.com where everything in the range is more or less half price so it will save you a mini fortune.

I had a horrendous eyebrow makeover at the Benefit shop in Islington. I went in to pick up my usual Speed Brow gel and the girl insisted on showing me another way to do my brows with wax and powder. Mr P was with me and stuck around as there was a massive jar of Lindor chocolates at the till which he kindly assisted in emptying while I was having my brows butchered.
By the end of the 'experiment' I looked like a Cretan taxi driver.
I shall be sticking to my usual brow gel and to hell with your brow powder, woman!

I'm LOVING : my NARS blush in Gaiety which is even more lush with my new tan, my Erborian BB creme in Dore', Maybelline Fit Me concealer which is way better than I first gave it credit for, and Korres Wild rose lip butter (OMG, I should write a poem about it)

Sorry for no pictures but if I could find the sodding camera to computer then there would be.

Please let me know what you've been loving recently and what you've all been up to. I'm still here and I hope you are too :)
